The 6 Founder Personalities
Research on thousands of startup founders identified six recurring personality patterns. This page uses the paper’s cluster descriptions, then turns them into a readable overview.
Our research
What The Founder Personality Quiz is based on
Our 2023 Scientific Reports paper analysed founder personality patterns inferred from public Twitter language and linked them to Crunchbase startup outcomes. The clustering step used 32,732 founders; the startup success model used 21,187 companies after filtering.
In our study, startup success meant that a company was acquired, acquired another company, or went public. The six founder types on this page come from the paper directly.
Each founder type below includes a short note showing where the description comes from in the paper: the results text, Table 1, the role-distribution analysis, or the appendix heatmap.

Spontaneous, tough, and uncompromising under pressure
Fighters move quickly and push hard when something needs to happen. They often question assumptions and keep things moving because they tend to be spontaneous and impulsive, tough, sceptical, and uncompromising. That can make them especially useful during intense phases like a launch or market entry.
Centroid Big Five Profile
The Big Five profile shown here is based on the centroid personality traits of all Fighters. This resembles an average, it does not mean that all Fighters necessarily have this Big Five combination. Our type classification works with a more fine-grained personality analysis based on 30 personality traits.

We obtained the information on Fighters directly from the results section of our paper, Figure 1D, and Extended Data Figure 12.
Successful team combinations
In our data we have thousands of successful founder combinations. One founder mix we often see around Fighters:
Operator
Orderly operators who keep systems working
Operators keep things running. They bring order to chaos and make sure systems, logistics, and delivery hold together because this cluster is especially high in conscientiousness through orderliness and high in agreeableness through humility. They often fit service, maintenance, and operations roles where coordination and consistency matter.

Accomplisher
Organised and confident builders who drive execution
Accomplishers are structured builders who help turn plans into progress. They often bring steady execution because they are organised and outgoing, confident, down-to-earth, content, accommodating, mild-tempered, and self-assured. In role terms, they appeared more often in positions such as CEO, CFO, and COO.

Leader
Adventurous leaders who create direction and momentum
Leaders bring direction and momentum to a founding team. They often do well in uncertainty and bring people together around an idea because they tend to be adventurous, persistent, dispassionate, assertive, self-controlled, calm under pressure, philosophical, excitement-seeking, and confident. This can make them especially valuable in the early stages of building a company.

Engineer
Imaginative problem-solvers with strong technical depth
Engineers are analytical builders who shape ideas through logic and design. They are often strong at building systems, solving complex problems, and scaling technology because this cluster is highest in openness through the facets of imagination and intellect. Their precision and curiosity support product quality and technical depth.

Dutiful builders with broader technology fit
Developers sit between creativity and execution. They share some characteristics with Fighters, but with higher extraversion and a broader fit across technology roles. Their closest occupation fit includes application developers and related roles such as business systems analyst and product manager.
